What Remained of the Light

This painting was created along the Blue Ridge Parkway shortly after a tennis tournament.
We hurried through the winding mountain roads, hoping to arrive before sunset. By the time the easel was set up, however, most of the light had already faded. At first, I felt disappointed that I had missed the colors I had expected to paint.
But as I began working, my attention shifted from what was gone to what remained.
The mountains gradually dissolved into darkness while the evening sky revealed subtle layers of color, movement, and atmosphere that might have been overlooked in brighter light. Small lights slowly appeared across the valley below, offering a quiet contrast to the vastness of the fading sky.
What Remained of the Light is a reflection on presence and perception. It reminds us that beauty does not always arrive as planned. Sometimes it reveals itself only after expectations have been released and our attention settles into what is still quietly there.
