This painting was created along the Blue Ridge Parkway shortly after a tennis tournament.
The journey to the overlook took longer than expected. By the time the winding mountain roads released us onto the ridge, daylight was already fading. The brilliant sunset I had hoped to paint had nearly disappeared.
At first, I felt disappointed.
But as I stood before the landscape, something unexpected happened. The mountains gradually dissolved into darkness while the sky revealed a quieter kind of beauty—layers of drifting clouds, subtle color shifts, and vast movements of atmosphere that would have been easy to overlook in brighter light. Small lights began to appear throughout the valley below, scattered like distant stars beneath the evening sky.
As I painted, my attention moved away from what had been lost and toward what remained.
What Remained of the Light is not a painting about sunset. It is a painting about presence. It reflects a moment when expectation gave way to observation, and when beauty emerged not from what was planned, but from what was still there to be seen.
The sweeping sky dominates the composition, while the dark silhouettes of the Blue Ridge Mountains anchor the scene below. Together they create a sense of quiet scale, inviting the viewer into the stillness that settled over the landscape as day turned into night.
This work is a reminder that some of the most meaningful moments arrive after we stop searching for what we expected and begin paying attention to what is before us.
